The Chronicles of Riddick is a 2004 American science fiction film which follows the adventures of Richard B. Riddick, as he attempts to elude capture after the events depicted in the 2000 film Pitch Black, and details his meeting with Jack and Imam, his escape from the prison planet Crematoria, and his battle with the Necromonger fleet. Directed by David Twohy (Pitch Black), the film stars Vin Diesel (reprising his role as Riddick, also co-producer), Karl Urban, Alexa Davalos, Thandie Newton, Colm Feore, with Judi Dench, and Keith David (reprising his role as Imam from Pitch Black).
After the release of the film, The Chronicles of Riddick became the brand name of the series. Despite not doing especially well on cinema the film has been successful on DVD and has gained a cult following.

Riddick has been in hiding for five years after Pitch Black. He evades the bounty hunter Toombs, killing Toombs' crew and stealing his ship. He then heads to the planet Helion Prime, after Toombs reveals his bounty originated there. Once there, Riddick is reunited with Imam, the man he rescued in Pitch Black. Imam wants to know about his homeworld, the devastated planet Furya and if anyone other than himself is left. Imam believes Helion Prime is the next planet to be conquered by the Necromongers, an army of religious fanatics who seek to convert everyone and kill those who refuse. The Necromongers invade, overwhelming the defense forces and take control of the capital. In the ensuing battle, Imam is killed and Riddick escapes.
The next day, the Necromonger high priest, coerces the populace into converting, except for Riddick, who defiantly kills the man who killed Imam. Intrigued, the Lord Marshal orders Riddick be examined where it is discovered that he is the last Furyan, so the Lord Marshal orders Riddick's death. Riddick escapes the Necromonger ship, and allows himself to again be captured by Toombs. Riddick is taken to Crematoria, a harsh prison, where Jack from Pitch Black was reported to have been sent.
Following Riddick's escape, the Lord Marshal sends Commander Vaako to hunt him down, an easy process since Toombs' ship left behind an easily traceable path. Vaako's wife speaks to an Elemental who was a seer for the Lord Marshal. The Elemental reveals that Furya was destroyed by the Lord Marshal after he was told a male child from that planet would destroy him. On Crematoria, a disagreement breaks out between Toombs and the prison warden over what Toombs is owed. Word about the Necromongers has reached the isolated prison warden, who suspects that Toombs stole Riddick from them, and that it will bring trouble. In the prison, Riddick finds Jack, now named Kyra, and they eventually reconcile.
Later, the guards kill all the bounty hunters, take the prize money and prepare to leave before the Necromongers arrive. Riddick leads several prisoners to steal the ship. The guards reach the hanger, just as the prisoners arrive outside of hanger doors. Just then the Necromongers arrive. All of the guards are killed and Riddick is incapacitated by Vaako. With the approach of the vicious sunrise (from 0 to 700 degrees in seconds), Vaako leaves Riddick to die; Kyra, thinking Riddick is dead, flees with the Necromongers.
However, Riddick is saved by the Purifier, who tells him that if he stays away from the Necromongers, they will not hunt him. The Purifier then reveals that he too is Furyan, and that Vaako will report Riddick as dead, giving Riddick the element of surprise. The Purifier then commits suicide by walking out into the scorching heat after he encourages Riddick to save Kyra and kill the Lord Marshal. Meanwhile, Vaako reported Riddick dead and is named heir apparent by the Lord Marshal. Riddick flies back to Helion Prime.
Riddick, disguised in Necromonger armor, infiltrates the main hall; Dame Vaako sees him, but encourages her husband to let Riddick strike first to wound the Lord Marshal and paving the way for Vaako to kill him. When Riddick strikes, the Lord Marshal presents Kyra, who appears to have converted; Riddick attacks, but when it appears that Riddick has lost, Kyra stabs the Lord Marshal in the back with a spear. She is then mortally wounded after being impaled on some spikes. Vaako makes his move to strike, but Riddick, who in the fight has figured out the Lord Marshal's weakness, ends up killing the Lord Marshal. Kyra dies, and the Necromongers kneel before Riddick, the new Lord Marshal.

There are three versions of the film. The theatrical cut, which was PG-13, the Director's Cut, which is unrated; both are available on DVD. The third version is a mix of the two assembled for television viewing, which has some, but not all, of the added footage from the Director's Cut. For instance, the minor subplot in the Director's cut of Riddick's visions, as well as his moments with Toombs' second in command, are both absent, but the ending from the Director's cut is present.

The Chronicles of Riddick the theatrical version received mostly negative reviews from film critics, receiving a 29% Rotten rating with an average score of 4.7/10 on aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes.[3] and an average 38/100 score on MetaCritic[4] most of the criticism comes from the editing and some of the pacing.
For his performance in the film, Vin Diesel was nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Actor at the 2005 Golden Raspberry Awards, but lost to George W. Bush for Fahrenheit 9/11.

Considering its production budget was reported to have been between $105 million[1] and $120 million[2] (which does not include the additional costs for marketing and distribution), the film was a box office disappointment. It grossed $57 million domestically, and its total worldwide gross stands between $107 million[2] and $115 million[1] depending upon sources. However, it was significantly successful on DVD, where it gained a cult following.

The film spun off books, animation and video games. The Xbox game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, later ported to the PC, released simultaneously with the film was well received[5] as was the animated short film The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury by Æon Flux director Peter Chung.[citation needed]
The "unrated director's cut" DVD (featuring scenes which were cut in order to obtain a PG-13 rating) was released on November 16, 2004, and sold 1.5 million copies on the first day alone. On April 7, 2009, a remake of the video game was included with the release of the game sequel The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

A third Riddick film is in development titled, simply, Riddick.
In a March 8, 2006, article on Comingsoon.net, it was reported that Vin Diesel claimed that a sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick was in the works.[6] According to him, he had already written a storyline that covered a trilogy which began with the Chronicles of Riddick. Another article on Comingsoon.net, written on March 11, 2005, reports that Vin Diesel states that Chronicles 2 was to deal with The Underverse, while Chronicles 3 was to conclude the series with a return to Furya.[7]
An article dated November 10, 2007, on countingdown.com, further indicates that a sequel may be in works - "We're talking about it". Twohy indicates however that it "probably won't be a Universal movie and probably will be an independent movie" seeing a much smaller budget.[8]
Two more sequels have been confirmed for production, and David Twohy is now writing the scripts.[9] Diesel told MTV News that in spite of the poor reception, the time between the sequels is only about getting it right, not about trying to find support.
"Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I’m always working on it", Diesel asserted. "It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precise about it."[10]
On March 20, 2009, Diesel commented on a sequel in an interview on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, stating that David Twohy has nearly finished scripts and is planning to start production on the third film in early 2010.[11]
On November 30, 2009, Diesel left an update on his Facebook page effectively announcing that pre-production work is underway on the Chronicles of Riddick sequel.[12]
On February 9, 2010, Diesel confirmed in an update on his Facebook page that one of the locations used in the upcoming sequel would be the White Desert in Farafra, Egypt. He mentioned the terrain features, unique to the area, would lend to the off-planet atmosphere of the film.[13]
On March 13, 2011, Diesel released a video on his official Facebook page in which he and Director David Twohy talk about the proposed third film. They suggest the movie will be rated 'R', like the first one (Pitch Black), a priority for them and the plan is to shoot it lean and quickly; they suggest seduction will be a part of the new movie. At last report the plot has Riddick left for dead on a desolate planet fighting for survival against not just alien predators, but also bounty hunters.[14]
As of August 10, 2011, they have begun casting.[15][16] As of March 3, 2012 they have begun filming in Montreal[17]
Riddick is being financed independently, meaning there will not be as many over-the-top effects and action as with Chronicles, but more of a rough, simple feel as with Pitch Black.[15][16]
The plot will find the eponymous criminal once more on the run from mercenaries who want the hefty reward his head will bring, he once again ends up on a planet teeming with alien beasts. The beginning of the story will likely tie into the ending of Chronicles and feature cameos from characters who have appeared in the previous films.[15][16]
The Sequel Film will be released on September 6, 2013.
